Despite the madness that is our current political life, DC is more than a company town. Fortunately, we have a vibrant book culture. I’m so happy to introduce you to one of our newest publishers—Stirred Stories, founded by DC’s own Kelsea Johnson.
Kelsea and her colleagues are putting out beautiful children’s books and branching into YA. I love her vision and enthusiasm. Here’s a short interview about what sustains her.
How did you get into the publishing business? Stirred Stories started as a coffee shop conversation with my co-founder, Kyle Porro. We were both struck by the lack of diversity in the publishing world and felt compelled to do something about it. For me, that impetus was rooted in my lifelong adoration of reading and the realization that my favorite books growing up rarely included characters that reflected my lived experiences. I am excited by the opportunity to publish books that will diversify someone's bookshelf.
What do you publish? Stirred Stories publishes diverse, underrepresented authors across all genres. Right now, our catalog includes children's books, a young adult memoir, and an anthology. We're excited to be venturing into YA novels soon––stay tuned!
What's your dream for Stirred Stories? I dream of Stirred Stories being a household name, and I spend every second of every day working to make that happen. Our authors, and their stories, are incredible. We’ve seen time and again how much readers resonate with what we publish. Our books are a breath of fresh air! You won't find a more authentically diverse catalog out there. If Stirred Stories is a household name, we've done our job right: we've elevated historically marginalized voices to the mainstream, and created a more empathetic world in the process.
What sustains you? My belief that Publishing for a Better Tomorrow (our slogan at Stirred Stories) is worth it. My faith in God. Lots of coffee, lots of wine. And, of course, making time for a good book in between work sessions.
Thanks Kelsea!
Here’s me getting an advanced review copy to edit.
Lots of love,
Martha
